Waste management
SNIM’s management program for the activities waste focuses on the follow up on source separation, landfilling and recovery of these residues.
The recycling facilities currently available allow to treat namely batteries, filters, metal scrap and used oils. The rest is stored in compartmentalized and protected waste sites.
Water management
The location and geological and climatic conditions in Zouerate make water an even more precious natural resource than elsewhere. In addition to its industrial needs, SNIM takes the responsibly for meeting Zouerate and F'derick people needs in water. It also supplies market gardeners and breeder of the town along Zouerate-Nouadhibou corridor. All water production comes from fossil water tables.
The majority of the water produced by SNIM is intended for social consumption (local population).
Protection of biodiversity in Zouerate
Zouerate area is widely dominated by domestic animals, mainly camels and goats, but also sheep, donkeys, small mammals and reptiles, such as fennec, golden jackal (Canis aureus), scorpions, horned viper (Cerastes cerastes), the hare (Lepus capensis) and the desert monitor (Varanus griseus) commonly called «Dabb Tiris».

Protection of biodiversity in the mineral port zone
Keen to preserve the aquatic ecosystems around the mineral port of Nouadhibou, SNIM monitors their evolution every three years. The Mauritanian Institute for Oceanographic and Fisheries Research (IMROP) and the National Office of the Health Inspection of Fishery and Aquaculture Products (ONISPA) have been commissioned by SNIM to carry out this scientific monitoring of the environment.
Renewable energy
The integration of renewable energies into SNIM energy mix is continuously evolving.
Wind energy now represents 20% of Nouadhibou’s energy mix.
A second 12 Megawatt solar power plant is being built in Zouerate. it will make it possible to increase the share of renewable energies in the energy mix of Zouerate center.
