Press release
Nouakchott, May 24, 2022: SNIM and ArcelorMittal have signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to study opportunity to develop jointly two pellet and DRI plants in Mauritania, supplied by iron ores produced by SNIM.
This agreement plans a pre-feasibility study which will be completed after six months, to provide a better viability of the potential project that would take advantage of Mauritania's potential for renewable energy and green hydrogen production.
The metal generated from green hydrogen will be an important step in the transition of the steel industry to "zero carbon" and will contribute to the economic development of the Region.
SNIM is a mining company based in Mauritania, the second largest producer of iron ore in Africa. ArcelorMittal, the world's largest steel producer, is a European company based in Luxembourg.
